Branding

Brand Development Services

Brand development services settle who you sell to, why they should pick you and what you say about it, before anyone draws a logo. The answers fit on a few pages.

What a brand document usually holds

  • Positioning statement1 paragraph
  • Audience profileMain buyer types
  • Competitor mapWho else they call
  • Key messagesHeadline + proof points
  • Tone of voiceDo / don't notes

General contents of a brand strategy document. Your quote lists exactly which of these are included.

What brand development is

What brand development services decide

Brand development is the strategy work before design. It settles your positioning, your main customers and the handful of messages you want people to remember. The result is a short written document that your designers, your website and your ads can all follow.

It is the first layer of our branding services. Visual work, from the logo to the brand identity system, builds on top of it.

  • Positioning
  • Audience profile
  • Competitor map
  • Key messages
  • Tone of voice

When it is worth it

When strategy work pays off

If none of these apply, skip it and go straight to logo design. A good logo brief covers the basics.

  • A launch with no story yet

A new company or product that has not decided who it is for. Every later decision, from colors to ad copy, depends on that answer.

  • A business that has changed

You now sell something different, or to someone different, or you are expanding from Pakistan into the Gulf or the US. The old message no longer fits.

  • Partners who disagree

When owners, partners or family members each describe the business differently, a written position settles it before money goes into design.

The work

What a brand development project covers

Six pieces of work, each ending in something written down. We confirm the steps and timeline when we scope your project.

  • Questionnaire and call

Written questions about your business, customers and goals, then a conversation to go through the answers. Partners join if their view decides the outcome.

  • Competitor map

The alternatives your customers actually consider, and how each describes itself, in every market you sell in. The gaps show where you can stand apart.

  • Audience profile

The two or three main buyer types: what they need, what they worry about, and where they look before they buy.

  • Positioning statement

One paragraph on who you serve, what you promise and why you can be believed. It stops your website and ads from saying what everyone says.

  • Key messages

A headline message and the proof points behind it, so writers, sales staff and designers work from the same script.

  • Tone of voice

A few tone notes, each with a "not" beside it, plus example lines. Short enough to pin next to whoever writes your posts.

Your brand on one page

A positioning canvas you can fill in today

Brand development ends in a page like this. Each box has a question, a line to complete, and a filled-in line for a made-up Karachi business so you can see the level of detail. If a box cannot be filled in honestly, that points to something in the business itself, and design alone will not fix it.

Positioning canvas

Fill in one box at a time, left to right.

Example: home tutoring, Karachi
A

Audience

Who are we for, exactly?

We help main customer type in area or market

ExampleParents of O and A level students in Clifton and DHA, booking for the months before exams.

B

Problem

What goes wrong for them today?

Today they what they put up with

ExampleTutors cancel late, and parents cannot tell whether sessions are helping.

C

Promise

What do we commit to, in one line?

We give them the result they pay for, instead of the alternative they would use

ExampleA checked tutor at home, with a short progress note after every session, instead of a cousin's recommendation.

D

Proof

Why should anyone believe it?

Because the difference you can show

ExampleSample progress notes, tutor checks and parent reviews they agree to share.

E

Voice

How do we sound when we say it?

We sound tone, not the opposite

ExampleCalm and exact, not salesy. "Here is what Ali covered this week", not "Best tutors in town!!"

The tutoring business is fictional and only shows how the boxes are used. It is not a client. See how strategy work is scoped on the branding pricing page.

Brand Development: common questions

What is brand development?

Brand development is the strategy work that comes before design. It settles who your customers are, how you are different from the alternatives they consider, and the few messages you want people to remember. The result is a short written document that guides the logo, identity, website and ads.

How is brand development different from brand identity?

Brand development is about what you say and stand for. Brand identity is about how you look: logo usage, colors, fonts and templates. Development answers the questions that identity design depends on, so it comes first when those answers are unclear.

Do small businesses need brand strategy?

Not always as a separate project. If you know your customer, your difference and your name, a good logo brief covers it. A dedicated strategy round pays off for new launches, rebrands, partners who disagree, and businesses entering a new country.

Can brand development include naming my business?

Naming can be part of brand development: a shortlist checked for meaning, pronunciation, and domain and social handle availability. Trademark clearance is a legal step to confirm with a lawyer or the trademark office, such as the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan. If you need a name, say so in your brief and we will confirm whether it fits the project.

What do I get at the end?

A written brand document: positioning statement, audience profile, competitor notes, key messages and tone of voice. We agree the deliverables before work starts.

Can you develop a brand for the US or UAE market from Karachi?

Yes. We serve clients in Pakistan, the US and the UAE. Most strategy work is research and writing, which does not need you in the same room. Karachi is one hour ahead of Dubai and 9 to 10 hours ahead of New York.
