To choose a digital marketing agency, check four things before anything else: real proof of similar work, a clear written scope, honest reporting, and accounts that stay in your name. Everything else, from the pitch deck to the price, is easier to judge once those four are clear.

Pakistan has a large number of agencies and freelancers, from one-person studios to big firms. That gives you choice, but it also makes comparison hard. This guide gives you a simple way to compare agencies on the same terms, whether you are a business in Karachi or a company in the US or UAE hiring from Pakistan.

Start with your goal, not the agency

Before you contact anyone, write down in one or two lines what you need. For example:

  • “We need a new website that brings in quote requests.”
  • “Our online store gets visits but few sales.”
  • “We want to show up on Google Maps in our area.”
  • “We need someone to run our Facebook and Instagram ads every month.”

A clear goal tells you what kind of agency you need. A web design project, local SEO and monthly ad management call for different skills. It also stops agencies from selling you a package you don’t need.

What to check before you shortlist

Case studiesShow how the agency thinks, not just what it madeLook for the problem, the work done and what changed

How to judge proof

Proof is where agencies differ most, and where it’s easiest to be misled.

Open the live work. If an agency shows websites it built, visit them. Check them on your phone. Are they fast, clear, and still online? Our own case studies are live websites you can open and judge for yourself.

Look for the story, not just the picture. A good case study explains what the client needed, what the agency did and why. Screenshots alone tell you about design, not about results or how the agency works.

Be careful with numbers. “300% more traffic” means little without a starting point, a time period and a source. Ask how the figure was measured.

Check reviews and logos. Review profiles should link to real businesses. Client logos should belong to clients who actually worked with the agency. If something can’t be traced, don’t count it.

Questions to ask in the first call

Ask every agency on your shortlist the same questions, and write down the answers:

  1. Have you done work like ours? Can I see it live?
  2. Who will work on my account day to day?
  3. What exactly is included each month or in this project, and what isn’t?
  4. What do you need from us, and when?
  5. How do you report, and how often?
  6. Whose name will the domain, hosting, ad and analytics accounts be in?
  7. How long until we should expect to see early signs of progress, and what will they look like?
  8. How do we end the contract if it isn’t working?
  9. For overseas clients: what hours overlap with ours, and how are calls scheduled?

Good agencies answer these directly. Vague answers now usually mean vague work later.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. No one controls Google’s results. An agency that guarantees the first page is either guessing or planning shortcuts that can hurt your site.
  • Packages with no task list. “Gold SEO package” means nothing until you know what is done each month.
  • Results you can’t verify. Big numbers with no client name, no time period and no way to check.
  • No access to your own accounts. If the agency owns your ad account, domain or analytics, leaving becomes hard and expensive.
  • Long lock-ins with no exit. A contract you can’t leave protects the agency, not you.
  • Prices far below everyone else. Ask what is being left out. Cheap SEO often means bought links or copied content.
  • Unclear who you are dealing with. No real address, no named person, and no way to check the company exists.

A scorecard to compare agencies

Score each agency from 1 to 5 on each line after your calls. Add up the totals, then read your notes again before you decide. The highest score is a starting point, not the answer.

CriteriaAgency AAgency BAgency C
Relevant work you could verify
Clear written scope
Sample report you understood
Accounts in your name
Fair contract and exit terms

Price belongs in the decision too, but compare it only after scope. Two quotes are only comparable when they cover the same work.

Hiring from the US or UAE

Many businesses outside Pakistan hire agencies here. The checks above all apply. Add these:

  • Time zones. Karachi is on Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5). Agree on regular call times and a reply window in writing.
  • Market knowledge. Ask whether the agency has worked for clients in your country, and whether it understands your platforms, search habits and ad rules.
  • Languages. For the Gulf you may need Arabic as well as English. For US local SEO, the agency needs to write naturally for American buyers.
  • Payments and invoicing. Agree on currency, payment method and invoice details at the start.

How we work

ObtainTek is a single-member digital marketing company based in Karachi, serving clients in Pakistan, the US and the UAE. We cover SEO, web design, branding, social media and paid ads.

We don’t publish prices. Every project starts with a written scope, and your quote lists exactly what’s included. Your domain, ad and analytics accounts are set up in your name. Ongoing work comes with a written update each month. We talk by email or WhatsApp, with US and UAE call times arranged in advance. You can see websites we have built in our case studies, and judge them by the same checks in this guide.

The next step

Write your goal in one line, shortlist two or three agencies, and ask each the questions above. If you’d like us on that list, contact us with your goal and we’ll reply with the questions we need answered to scope it. You can also start from our home page to see the services we offer, or browse more guides on the blog.

Questions about this topic

How do I choose the right digital marketing agency?

Start with your goal, then shortlist agencies that have done that kind of work. Check real examples you can verify, ask for a written scope, ask how they report results, and make sure your website, ad and analytics accounts stay in your name. Compare two or three agencies on the same questions.

What should I ask a digital marketing agency before hiring?

Ask who will do the work, what is included each month, what is not, how and how often they report, what they need from you, who owns the accounts, and how you can end the contract. Ask to see live examples of similar work.

What are the red flags when hiring an agency?

Guaranteed first-page rankings, vague monthly packages with no list of tasks, results you can't verify, refusing to give you access to your own accounts, long lock-in contracts, and reviews or client logos that can't be traced to real businesses.

Should I hire one agency for everything or specialists?

One agency is simpler to manage and keeps your website, SEO and ads working toward the same goal. Specialists can go deeper on one channel. For most small and mid-sized businesses, one agency with clear scope per service works well, as long as it has real experience in each area you need.

Can a business in the US or UAE hire an agency in Pakistan?

Yes. Many businesses do. Check the same things you would check locally, plus time-zone overlap, how calls and updates are scheduled, payment methods, and whether the agency knows your market, platforms and language needs.
