Why image size matters for your website

Large photos are the most common reason a website loads slowly, and slow pages lose visitors, especially on mobile data. Google also uses page speed as part of how it judges the experience on your site.

    • Resize first: a photo shown 800 pixels wide doesn't need to be 4000 pixels wide.
    • Then compress: 100–200 KB is a good target for most website photos.
    • Use WebP where you can: it's usually smaller than JPG at the same quality.

    Questions about this tool

    Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression runs inside your browser. Your photos never leave your device.

What size should website photos be?

For most website photos, 100 to 200 KB is a good target. Large hero images can go a little higher. Smaller files make pages load faster, especially on phones.

    Will the photo lose quality?

A little. The tool lowers the quality setting until the file fits your target, and only shrinks the dimensions if that isn't enough. The preview lets you check before you download.

Should I use JPG or WebP?

WebP is usually smaller at the same quality and works in all current browsers. Use JPG if the place you're uploading to doesn't accept WebP.
